How Ballpark Transformed a Library Basement into a Co-Designed Youth Destination

CHALLENGE
Public library systems consistently struggle to attract the 18–35 Gen-Z and millennial demographic outside of traditional educational contexts. As soaring inflation and high commercial nightlife costs leave young suburban residents without safe, alcohol-free "third spaces," local artists are also being priced out of commercial studio spaces across Long Island. Public libraries already house world-class, free Maker Spaces with 3D printers and laser cutters, but library leadership needed an intentional bridge to get these working creatives into the building to discover and use these high-value tools.
SOLUTION
Ballpark engineered an after-hours basement concert series inside the Patchogue-Medford Library, specifically designed to demystify public utility access. The activation strategically routed all foot traffic directly through the library's technical creative spaces — introducing local musicians, artists, and attendees to low-cost tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, heat presses, and vinyl printers. To drive local ownership, Ballpark partnered with the Patchogue Arts Council and created a community sticker design contest, printing every single submitted design for attendees on-site.
